			The Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDWP) was born in 1976 from the ashes of the old Workers' Party, a socialist movement that had been sidelined during Tsz Kong's early independence years. Merging labor unionists, intellectuals, and moderate socialists, the SDWP positioned itself as the mainstream voice of the left, advocating for workers' rights, public healthcare, and progressive taxation while rejecting the radicalism of far-left factions. Under its first leader, Ho Tak-kei, a former dockworkers' union boss, the party became a key opposition force against the ruling Democratic Party, pushing for stronger labor protections and welfare reforms during Tsz Kong's economic boom.

			By the 1980s, the SDWP had cemented itself as the natural home for working-class voters, dominating industrial districts and forming alliances with trade unions. Its success lay in its pragmatic social democracy—supporting market economics but demanding fairer distribution of wealth. However, its reluctance to embrace newer progressive causes (like environmentalism or gender equality) would later become a liability.

			The 1997 Asian Financial Crisis should have been the SDWP's moment. With mass layoffs and austerity measures fueling public anger, the party had a chance to lead a left-wing resurgence. Instead, it faltered. Younger activists saw it as out of touch, still clinging to old-school labor politics while ignoring climate change and social justice. Meanwhile, the party's aging leadership grew increasingly socially conservative, resisting LGBTQ+ rights and immigration reforms to hold onto its traditional blue-collar base. This led to the Democratic Socialist Alliance (DSA) attacking it for being out of touch with modern Tsz Kong. Its brief presidency in the 2010s did it no favours as the party lost the elections to the Nationalists, allowing their return to power.

			The 2020s were the final nail in the coffin. The SDWP’s refusal to adapt to climate politics and its social conservatism made it a relic in an era of growing eco-socialist movements. When the Democratic Socialist Greens (DSG) formed in 2023, most remaining SDWP members defected, leaving the party a hollow shell of its former self. By 2031, with its voter base eroded and its influence gone, the SDWP officially disbanded, marking the end of an era. Some of its last members joined the DSG, while others drifted into right-wing populism or retired from politics entirely.
