The Chinese Name Controversy is a discussion in #general on the 26th of January 2022.

Prior

Card0 commanding that a user with a Chinese name change their name to something 'pingable'

A user with a non-English name of "𒈙𒐫𒅃 𒈓𒀱𒅌𒁏𒈓𒀱𒀰⸻𒄡" joined, with no prior warning, Card0 kicked them. Both flutters and Lt. Quattro showed their disapproval of the decision.

Many prior the incident joined the server with non-English names.

Recently, Card0 would change their names or forcefully have people change their names to something English. When a user joins 852Resurgence, a user is greeted by Card0 himself, and that includes a ping every time. This very welcome message which welcomed user 媽咪話個名太長會有傻仔跟住讀 was what sparked flutters with the usage of the phrase "make your name pingable"

Disagreement

flutters brought Card0 to the concept of identity and if one prefers to be named in another language let it be. flutters themselves would not like to use their legal English name and resort to their Chinese legal name's nickname of 希希 and even threatened to change it in protest of Chinese names.

Another argument is to change ones keyboard as it isn't something hard to do. In demonstration, flutters pinged every non-English name (except for one that was in a weird ASCII font). andi also supported flutters' argument as changing a keyboard is not so hard, and even so you could just use mobile to ping them if the Chinese keyboard on PC wasn't that good. Others also joined in supporting the claim that one could just handwrite the Chinese character without knowing any Chinese.

Polls

Card0 then put a poll, with melody (alt of flutters) showing arguments from both sides which got deleted and restored.

Going overboard

flutters then kept arguing because for someone to change their whole identity just for one person who is not willing to change their keyboard just to ping them seemed ludicrous to them. During that time, flutters was also on probation and Card0 threatened that, "i am this close to extending your probation right now"

flutters then responded with "extend it honey, me and andi have the same point"

Aftermath

海南雞飯's nickname after the new "Chinese Name" Rule

The chat was brought to another topic by andi, "should card0 be impeached for saying char siu bao (is better than) hargow"

The poll ended in favor of Chinese names, with a ratio of 22:3.

The new compromise was that "all Chinese names will have the prefix 'ZH'".

Kanji and Chinese?

Japanese name mistaken as ZH

One user was named entirely in Japanese. Their name was changed in the process even if their name was not fully in another language, and that it wasn't even Chinese. The error was changed shortly after.

Further Errors

On March 21 2022, a user changed their nickname to 鈴木愛理. Card0 put the prefix ZH even if it was intended to be Kanji.

Present Day

JP Prefix given due to error in mistaking such as ZH.

This is no longer enforced, funnily enough it is actually easy to ping people who have Chinese names with a Chinese keyboard, and that there is no need for a prefix as if there were too many ZH's you'd have an ocean of them and would have to type their name out in Chinese anyways.

Remains of the ZH prefix

ZH Prefix Removed from user on 10th of October 2023

Users with the ZH prefix in their nickname and have not changed their nickname have just been reinstated to their original names on the 10th of October 2023.
